Cameron Sutton is no longer a fugitive. The former Detroit Lions cornerback kept a very low profile following accusations of alleged domestic violence. However, a recent statement from his lawyers gave an unexpected twist to the player’s plot.

On March 21, 2024, news began to circulate that the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office had issued an arrest warrant for Sutton for “aggravated assault – domestic violence.” The alleged events would have occurred on March 7, although initially, the identity of the victim was not disclosed.

Since then, the player’s whereabouts were unknown. The authorities could not locate him at his home or through his cell phone. Given the seriousness of the events and Sutton’s absence, the Lions decided to release him.

An unexpected development in the case

After a week out of the public eye, on Monday, April 1st, it was announced that Sutton had finally turned himself in to the authorities. “After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” announced a statement from Sheriff Chad Chronister.

However, a few hours after turning himself in, Sutton was released. “On March 31, 2024, Mr. Cameron Sutton voluntarily turned himself into the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. On April 1, 2024, he was released on his own recognizance,” reports a bulletin from his attorneys.

“Released on his own recognizance” means that the player was released without bail, on the condition of signing a written undertaking that he will appear in court when required.

The charges against Sutton

According to the statement, “After completing an investigation into the matter, the Office of the State Attorney has elected to file a single misdemeanor.”

The document also explains that the player’s family wants privacy to resolve their differences: “Both Mr. Sutton and the mother of his children request privacy in this matter, as they view this as a family matter and wish to resolve it as a family.”

With the legal consequences seemingly resolved, Sutton’s career could benefit. Whether the Lions decide to reinstate him to their roster or another team is interested in signing him, there is now at least a chance to see the star cornerback in the 2024 NFL season.
